It was a pleasure to welcome Matt McCall, the new head basketball at UMass Amherst and Athletic Director Ryan Bamford to the State House. Having served as an assistant coach under both Mike Jarvis and Billy Donovan, Coach McCall learned from two of the best and it showed with a record of 48-18 at Chattanooga. He's got the energy, enthusiasm , experience and confidence of a winning coach. As a long time season ticket holder and fan of the team, I wish Coach McCall the best of luck and I'm already looking forward to next season.

I am happy to report that late Tuesday night, after two days of debate, the House passed a budget for the upcoming year. Despite the limited funds available, we continue to make significant investments in support of public education and local aid to all 351 cities and towns of the Commonwealth.

As for the great communities I represent, Granby received an additional $22,000 in Chapter 70 funding and a $33,000 increase in local aid. Easthampton received an additional $53,000 in... Chapter 70 and a $105,000 increase in local aid. Hadley's increases amounted to over $16,000 in Chapter 70 and over $17,000 in local aid. Finally, South Hadley received an additional $57,000 in Chapter 70 funding and an increase of $97,000 in local aid.

I am grateful to Speaker DeLeo for appointing me as House Chair of the Joint Committee on Higher Education. Having previously taught at Indiana University, Notre Dame, Westfield State and UMass-Amherst, I'm excited to focus again on higher education. With Mount Holyoke College and a portion of the UMass campus in my District as well as the other prominent public and private institutions in the Pioneer Valley and across the Commonwealth, I recognize the importance of higher education to our future progress and prosperity. I look forward to working with Senator Michael Moore, my Co-Chair, and the other members of the Committee to build upon Massachusetts' stellar history in higher education and further strengthen our institutions and expand opportunities for future generations of students.

ABH would like to thank Aaron Vega State Rep, Jim Welch for State Senate, Rep Jose Tosado, State Representative John Velis, and Representative John Scibak for v...isiting Gandara Center's Hope for Holyoke program.

Hope for Holyoke is the only peer-based recovery program of its kind in Hampden County and there is no cost associated with participating; no insurance required. The program accepts all paths to recovery; offers therapy and group sessions; social events and job preparedness; and advocacy and recovery coaching. The recovery center opened two years ago to provide a continuum of care individuals to maintain their recovery.
